good morning. welcome to eyewitness news sunday. tim williams is joining us with the weather forecast. >> it will be another hot day. we'll take you to doppler radar to give you an idea. we are poised to have thunderstorms rolling through the region. what we have north around harrisburg and redding is a system that is pushing through the region. we had one portion push through last night. another one pushing through today. the one that pushes through today will change the dynamoearning dynamic -- dynamic of the temperatures. we are dealing with temperatures around 85 at bwi marshall. dew point 70. another humid start to the day. it feel like 90 degrees after you factor in the dew point and heat. as a result national weather service issued a heat advisory

for today. not excessive heat warning but a heat advisory from 11:00 until 8:00. because of the changes we'll be dealing with a slight risk of thunderstorms for the entire state through this day. forecast for this day starts off with temperatures in that 80-degree range. we are going up to a daytime high of 98 degrees with a strong thunderstorm this afternoon. another warm day. not as hot as it has been. we did tie the record of 103 degrees yesterday. it felt much hotter all through the day. we'll have your complete first warning forecast coming up. >> thank you. we have complete first warning weather coverage of the intense heat wave. we have more on how officials are trying to keep this dangerous weather from turning more deadly. >> reporter: good morning. volunteers were going door-to- door handing out ice and water.

state -- leaders are encouraging everyone to check on neighbors. mother nature surged temperatures into the triple digits. >> it is extremely hot. >> reporter: volunteers from the maryland defense force teamed up with the city to go door-to-door with hot weather supplies. >> we are bringing them water. were bringing them food. if they need a ride to a cool our area we are doing that, too. we are making sure everybody is okay. >> reporter: state leaders put an excessive heat warning in effect in maryland. >> you have effect of the heat on people. >> reporter: peter from the howard county health department said the heat warning should not be taken lightly. five heat-related deaths have been recorded in maryland. >> we are asking everyone to check in on their neighbors. once a day. twice a day. three times a day.

see how they are doing. particularly elderly. those not as mobile. >> reporter: pge and other utility crews are working to restore service to 5,000 customers. state leaders are urging residents without power to reach out to cooler isn'ters -- centers until repairs are made. stay out of the sun from noon to 5:00 when the sun is the strongest. marylanders are not alone as they battle triple digit weather. as drew levenson explains several states are cooking under scorching temperatures. >> reporter: people from the midwest to the east coast sweated through another blistering day. >> i'm drenched. >> reporter: saturday, temperatures in many places hit triple digits. philadelphia 101. st. louis 106. washington, d.c. where they set a record for july 7th mercury topped 105. >> when i came out of the air

and space museum i never felt anything like it. it burned right through me. >> reporter: this heat wave has health officials concerned. the health department urged residents to not stay outside too long and asked them to look in on their neighbors. in chicago a 64-year-old woman dropped dead from heat exhaustion inside her apartment. heat is blamed for 30 deaths. >> it has been 100-something in my house. >> reporter: in west virginia, police and firefighters handed out water and's to people without electricity for a week due to storms that raced through the area. in new york some saw refuge in city fountains. >> the's cream helped and being around my fantastic family.

>> reporter: saturday nights started moving in. they'll help bring temperatures back down to normal levels. >> 240 cities nationwide set all-time highs over 30 days. many people in our area will have the power to work air conditioners. we spoke with bge. 200 customers are without service following last week's storm. the remaining customers will be restored this afternoon. check in for first warning weather coverage for instant updates log on to wjz.com. we are following breaking news in howard county where crews are on the scene of a three-alarm fire. these pictures were just sent into wjz. we have few details now. firefighters say several people were evacuated from this apartment complex after the

fire broke out. no word yet on any possible injuries or cause of the fire. we'll bring you more details as they become available. meanwhile city police are asking for your help finding a missing teen. this is 15-year-old cameron wilkerson. he was last seen thursday on edison highway. cameron is a faster child and developmental challenged. if you have any information call 9-1-1. it is an oyster reef unlike any other in maryland. for the first time the chesapeake bay foundation established an oyster habitat that fisherman and residents can reach out and touch. tim williams has the story. >> reporter: they are the natural filters of the chesapeake bay. >> one adult oyster filters up to 50 gallons of water a day. they are a factory for cleaning the water. >> reporter: this week the

chesapeake bay foundation dumped three and a half million baby oysters on a reef in the river. see the shell before the campbell? volunteers are taking them out to the reef site where they'll be added to two million existing shells on the bay floor. why is this important? it is the first reef we know of immediately next to a public park. most reefs are in a river quite a ways where people can see and fish on them. >> reporter: over the next few years it is going to draw fisherman and tribute -- contribute to a struggling oyster population. >> the reefs attract little worms and other aquatic life which the fish feed on. fishermen love to fish. it is a rich, thriving habitat. >> reporter: one that benefits life in and around the bay. >> for more information on the

work of the chesapeake bay foundation look for a link to this story at wjz.com. we'll be eating oysters later this morning. i'm not sure i'm going to taste one. >> we are trying to come back from the heat. little by little, the transition is underway. temperatures are responding just a little bit. we had two sections moving through. one moved through to knock this back today. we are in the 90s. we did tie a record yesterday of 103. that was the actual temperature. heat index was higher. >> the real feel was 110. >> easily. >> keep in mind temperatures are measured in the shade.

if you are in the sun it is not 103. >> i never knew that. why do they do that? >> it is supposed to be a more accurate measure. it was a hot one yesterday. today not as bad. we are going to still challenge a record today. record today is 100. we are forecasting high of 98. that's 98 in the shade. if you are out in the sun take all the precautions. today should be the last day of these excessive temperatures. tomorrow we have a bit of a break. we have to get there. getting there is tricky. 85 degrees bwi marshall. 71 dew point. moist with north north easterly wind. winds from the north will bring in relief early on. we don't have a southwest wind pumping up to the 90 to 100- degree range. it will change here through the day. it is not going to be as bad as

it has been. 72 oakland. 74 cumberland. 84 ocean city. around the immediate metro area we have temperatures in the 80s around the entire area. hat index temperature is 90 degrees. winds coming in from the north and northeast. they'll be with us through the day. this is your first indication of the shift in the wind and the temperature change. the way we'll get here next week, the temperatures are going to drop much lower dew points because the hot core shifts. heat index will shift as a result of high pressure moving out of the region. there will be some strong, warm air and a high pressure system west. it is not going to impact us this time. you see the broken up shower activity. we'll be influenced by a line here. it is already starting to drop down into the area.

there are storms up around northeastern pennsylvania. this is all part of a front that will start to slowly back down into us. what will happen through the afternoon as that front starts to clash with the hot and humid conditions in place there will be thunderstorms. some could be strong. they'll move out of the area. front stalls south. it will give us a chance of showers and thunderstorms through the week. they are going to be spotty. this afternoon keep a close eye on that. strong thunderstorms could be in the future. 98 degrees today. 71 tonight. clouds and stray thunderstorm tomorrow. 86 degrees. rest of the week 84. 84. 84. we warm up to 89. normal high is 87. we are finally getting the temperatures at or below what is normal opposed to setting records that are 20 degrees

forecast high 98. place to be ocean city. strong thunderstorm rolling through this afternoon is something we'll keep a close eye on. this is transition getting in the cooler temperatures in the week. thunderstorm early this evening. we are looking at partly cloudy skies. ocean city forecast temperatures 84. good bit of sunshine. can not rule out a chance of a thunderstorm. water temperature 75. we'll are your completed first warning forecast coming up. >> thank you. turning to some of the other stories people are talking about. a run away seminearly causes a major explosion in ohio. watch as the white truck barrels off the highway. here it comes. it flips over and then wraps around the gas pump.

welcome back to eyewitness news sunday morning. it is going to be another hot day. not as scorching as it has been. this is a 12 day stretch of hot days with temperatures at or above 90 degrees. we'll be seeing a transition. we have temperatures in the 80s. why would anybody need to get on a cruise ship to go to warmer temperatures? >> i would look to go to alaska. >> temperatures here are as

warm as anywhere. we are warmer here than in florida and south beach. 85 our temperature. we are looking at a heat index of 90 in maryland. we have a heat advisory going into effect. many counties are already lifted from theheat advisory. we'll have a slight risk of thunderstorms as the front wipes out the heat and humidity in the area. we'll keep a close eye on that. temperatures 98. record 100. chance of a strong thunderstorm. temperatures 71 tonight. partly cloudy skies. hopefully these thunderstorms roll through without much problem. we'll have your completed forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you. temperatures expected to approach or surpass triple digits today. marylanders are urging themselves to protect

it is that time of the year again when the brave and foolish test their courage in the running of the bulls. thousands took the streets for the first day of the festival. organizers say several daredevils were injured. the running of the bulls was depicted in hemmingway's novel the sun also rises. while people in spain were running with the bull some folks in finland were running with their wives. it was the annual wife carrying championship. we see this every year. 34 teams attempted 277-yard obstacle course.

it is hazy, hot and humid. today not as bad. we did tie a record yesterday of 103 at bwi marshall. the heat index was close to 110 for much of the day. today, while we'll challenge another record of one, our forecast high is 98. heat index in the low 100s. this is the last day of temperatures. we have a transition moving through the region. it could bring thunderstorms. they'll move out and then we'll see improvement. 85 temperature bwi marshall. north northeasterly winds 8 miles per hour. that's the first indication temperatures are changing. winds are shifting away from the south and southwest which is pumping in warm, humid air.

dew points 71. current temperatures in the 70s in oakland. mid 80s around the rest of the area. temperatures in annapolis and kent island 87. 81 westminster. all going up ten degrees from where we are now. this north easterly wind is just going to stay in that direction and will bring in cooler air. there is a front poised to move through the region. we had two waves. first wave came through last night. brought us a few thundershowers and thunderstorms around cecil county and hartford county. much lower temperatures are moving in. as a result the second wave of that is going to be the one that brings the chance of rain. you can follow the line, the front will come crashing in the warmer more humid air mass. that will trigger thunderstorms ahead of it and along it. the front will stall to our

south. which means we'll have a chance of popup showers through the week and thunderstorms. you can see we are going to stay primarily clearer conditions for the week ahead. what that will mean for us is that if the early continues continue -- air continues to come in from the north 91 degrees. 71 tonight. tomorrow 86. thunderstorm not out of the question. that chance stays with us through the week. you'll see sunshine. lower dew points. lower humidity. lower temperatures. 84 tuesday wednesday and thursday. that will feel refreshing after what we have gone through after 12 days. >> amen! we need the relief. >> still ahead this sunday morning, don't clam up. it is almost time for oysters.

oysters. >> we do. i have one pacific coast oyster. it is a packed oyster from the prince edward island. it is usually higher than that. over to the right we have delaware bay. there is only five species of satellite oysters known to the world. but there are hundreds of kinds because of a marketing gimmick. years ago people aren't really knowledgeable about oysters. it has really been brought to the forefront. >> are you going to shuck one for us? >> yes. >> i always think it looks

risky. >> there is three different oyster knives. thinner is for the thinner shells. then a medium shell oyster and this blade would be for that. then the oysters that are native to maryland, maine and louisiana are going to be a much thicker shelled oyster. you'll want something bigger. you want to go up to the top and run your knife across the top. >> how do you like to eat them? >> there is a lot of different ways. classically with a vinegar
